Grids failure rate increased by 30% in the Kyiv region due to the schedules: energy workers ask residents for help

Thermal power generation06 December 2024
The number of failures on the grids increased by almost a third in the Kyiv region. The majority of failures happen on the low-voltage equipment, which directly powers buildings of residents. One of the main causes of failures is simultaneous turning on of the energy-consuming devices by the residents of the region immediately after restoration of power supply. DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids specialists gave advice on how to help avoid this.

Schedules of stabilization power shutdowns help energy workers stabilize the energy system of the country after enemy strikes on the power facilities. Additionally, they help evenly distribute available scarce electricity among all residents of the Kyiv region. Meanwhile, application of schedules causes more intensive wear of equipment and increase in failure rate.

In comparison with the period prior to application of stabilization power shutdowns that began on November 18, the number of failures increased by 30%-50% depending on the district. This is especially true for the low-voltage grids, which directly power houses of residents of the Kyiv region. They are overloaded, when people turn on all devices present at home at the same time after restoration of power supply – electric heating, electric stoves, washing machines, boilers, etc. We ask residents for helpmake more efficient use of electricity and follow simple rules after electricity restoration, noted DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids CEO Vitalii Shaida.

To help the energy workers and not to expose equipment in your houses to the danger of possible failures, please:

  • Disconnect all energy-consuming devices from the grid during stabilization power shutdown (dark-grey zone of the schedule): washing machines, electric kettles, boilers, electric heaters, electric heating, electric stoves. Additionally, turn off the light in the premises, where there are currently no people.
  • After the electricity is restored, do not turn on all devices of high capacity at the same time. If there are several energy-consuming devices at home, you should use them in turn: turning on one only after the other is no longer running.
  • Energy-consuming devices, equipped with switch-on timers, should be programmed for running in the nighttime from 00:00 to 06:00.
  • We recommend customers, who use electric motors or pump stations, to disconnect them from the grid (electric motors give an extremely high load on the grids when they are started). They should be switched on 20-30 minutes after electricity restoration.

Energy workers pay special attention to the homes that have electric heating and ask never to turn heating to full capacity immediately after restoration of electricity, but rather gradually increase the load of the electric boiler. For instance: 20% of the electric boilers capacity should be reached 20 minutes after electricity restoration, 50% – 30 minutes after electricity restoration, full capacity 60 minutes after electricity restoration.
