Why is it dangerous to rest near electrical poles – explains DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids

Power lines in the Kyiv region may run near the places of leisure: along or through water bodies, park areas and forests. What to pay attention to in such places so as not to put yourself and others at risk of electrocution – tells DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids.
Why is it dangerous to rest near electrical poles – explains DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids

“Life and health of people is a No.1 priority for DTEK. We care about safety of residents and guests of the region. That is why we remind that every power line has its security zone that covers both a plot of land underneath and air space around it. Therefore, staying in this zone is dangerous!” – noted the company.

The security zone around power lines covers from 10 to 40 meters on both sides, for high-voltage lines – from 10 to 40 meters. Therefore, this should be considered when choosing a place for leisure to avoid places directly under the power lines or close to them.

It should also be remembered that touching the wires or other parts of the power lines is not the only threat to life or health of a person. Electrocution form high-voltage grids may occur even at the distance of 5 meters!

Imagine a situation when a 1.7-meter-tall fisherman walks under wires located 7 meters above the ground, carrying a 6-meter-long fishing rod on his shoulder. Even if the fishing rod does not touch the wires – there is a risk of electrocution of the fisherman. Besides, modern fishing rods are made of carbon plastic, which is an exceptionally good conductor of electricity. Therefore, walking with a fishing rod under the power lines is the same as walking with a metal rod.

Additionally, it is prohibited to fly kites near the power lines. As the thread may be made of the carbon fiber or with addition of metal fibers, which are good conductors of electricity.

Take care of yourself, your family and follow the rules of behavior near power lines, choose places for leisure away from the power lines.
