For the first time ever, DTEK Dnipro Grids teaches electricians using Virtual Reality
The VR simulator is the Oculus Quest virtual reality headset, using which our specialists are trained to make repairs in the virtual substation. Kampov Technology, the Ukrainian company, developed the training program for the VR simulator and a copy of a typical substation specifically for DTEK. The virtual model matches the scale, transmits all sounds and provides 360-degree video images. The simulated work environment is as close to reality as possible, and gives the feeling of being fully present at the power facility. In addition, the program traces compliance with health and safety and industrial safety requirements, the correct use of personal protective equipment, the use of warning and prohibition posters. Previously, mock-ups and stands were used to train specialists at substations, but they could not fully convey the work environment.
“DTEK is a conscious business that serves the interests of Ukraine, introduces innovative solutions and consistently improves the training system. Thanks to VR technology, our specialists can drill their actions when they are at the substation until it becomes second nature, and react as quickly as possible in real time. At the first stage of the project, we plan to have more than 120 employees trained using the VR,” says Andrii Tereshchuk, DTEK Dnipro Grids CEO.
DTEK Dnipro Grids has already tested the VR headset. The training program starts in March. Electricians will be trained to remove a transformer out of service and then put into operation at a 110/35/10 kV virtual substation. Everything is like in life - interacting with equipment, performing the necessary operations. First, the electricians study the theory and perform more than 50 switches in the training mode. Then how the electricians mastered new skills is assessed in the evaluation mode. The virtual teacher shows by example how to complete the task.
Training using a virtual simulator is included in the professional training and advanced training program for field teams and electricians who do the substation maintenance. In addition, dispatchers, supervisors of distribution networks and high-voltage substations, heads of groups of electrical substations will be trained using VR, but there will be a separate training course for them.
