For the first time ever, DTEK Regional Grids teaches electricians using Virtual Reality

DTEK Regional Grids is now using VR technologies to train the company's field personnel. From now on, electricians will be trained to work with high-voltage substation equipment in Virtual Reality. Such an innovative teaching approach has already been launched at DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids. At the first stage, the company will have 100 employees trained. The main goal of introducing the latest technologies is to improve the quality and speed of maintenance at substations in order to reduce the outage duration for customers in case of emergencies.

The VR simulator is the Oculus Quest virtual reality headset, using which our specialists are trained to make repairs in the virtual substation. Kampov Technology, the Ukrainian company, developed the training program for the VR simulator and a copy of a typical substation specifically for DTEK. The virtual model has the same size, transmits all sounds and provides 360-degree video images. The simulated work environment is as close to reality as possible, and gives the feeling of being fully present at the power facility. In addition, the program traces compliance with health and safety and industrial safety requirements, the correct use of personal protective equipment, the use of warning and prohibition posters. Previously, mock-ups and stands were used to train workers at substations, but they could not fully convey the work environment.

“DTEK is a conscious business that invests in innovation and technology. Using such VR simulator, our specialists will be able to practice their actions while working at the substation. Six dispatchers have already been trained as part of the staff development. Soon electricians of the field teams will also have such training. These state-of-the-art technologies will help our workers to improve the quality and speed of repairs at substations. And most importantly - reduce the outage duration for our customers in case of emergencies,” says Vitalii Shaida, DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids CEO.

During the training, the electricians remove a transformer out of service and then put into operation at a virtual substation. Then they study the theory and perform more than 50 switches. Everything is like in life - interacting with equipment, performing the necessary operations. A virtual teacher shows by example how to complete the task.

Training with the use of a virtual simulator is included in the professional training and advanced training program for the following jobs: Electrician of the field team, Electrician for the distribution networks operation, and Electrician for substation maintenance. In addition, dispatchers, supervisors of distribution networks and supervisors of high-voltage substations are to undergo the training. A separate course has been developed for them.
