How to prepare your home electrical system for winter: tips from DTEK Dnipro Grids

In the cold season, a lot of people switch on heaters, convectors, electric kettles, and other devices simultaneously, thus the load on the building and distribution networks increases. Overloading can de-energize both a room and an entire apartment building, and even a street. To avoid such situations, DTEK Dnipro Grids shares some tips on how to prepare the network for the autumn and winter period.

To avoid power outages during the cold season, DTEK Dnipro Grids asks their customers to calculate whether the internal networks of their houses will be able to withstand the load of all household appliances that they plan to use at the same time.

To do this, add up the capacity of all household electrical appliances, including electrical heating, underfloor heating, lighting, etc., and then compare it with the allowed capacity, which can be found in the distribution agreement. In the Dnipropetrovsk region, such an agreement can be concluded with DTEK Dnipro Grids. If, according to your calculations, the simultaneous power consumption of household appliances can exceed the allowed capacity, contact the company asking to increase it.

It is quite convenient to apply for an increase in the allowed capacity online through the DTEK Dnipro Grids website.

“DTEK strives to become the benchmark for customer focus. We are upgrading and renewing power grids. We also develop our remote services so that our customers save their time and use our services 24/7. One of these services is an increase in capacity, which is especially important before the onset of cold weather,” says Andrii Tereshchuk, Director General for DTEK Dnipro Grids.

Also, the company's customers need to check the electrical network health in the house or apartment. Please, remember that it is dangerous to do any the electrical work in the house on your own. It is better to entrust this work to an electrician.

In addition, DTEK Dnipro Grids recommends distributing the load on the network. Try turning on the most powerful devices in turn and avoid peak load hours. Usually, this time is from 7:00AM to 9:00AM and from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. It is recommended to use heating devices, dishwashers and washing machines at night. This will not only save the network from overloads but will also save up to 50% on the night tariff (if a smart meter is installed in the apartment or house).

As previously reported, before the heating season, DTEK Dnipro Grids carried out a large-scale work to prepare lines and electrical equipment in Dnipro and the region, allocating more than UAH 100 million for this.
