#EnergyWings: DTEK Dnipro Grids takes care of a stork with a damaged wing
A resident of the village Lyudmila found the chick, who was still very tiny and featherless. The kid fell out of the nest and was left without parents. He was very weak and barely survived. Now it has turned into a large and beautiful bird. However, he could not go to warm lands because of a damaged wing.
“When other storks were about to fly away, they circled around our house for a long time. We think they were calling him to go with them. But he could not fly,” says Lyudmila, trying to hold back her tears. “Our Busya is practically tame. He loves fish and meat. However, we can no longer keep him in the yard. We are afraid that he simply will not survive in winter. Therefore, we are very glad that the power engineers agreed to help and are now taking care of the bird”.
DTEK Dnipro Grids responded to the request of Pisarevka residents to take care of the stork. The company's electricians were installing stork nest platforms in this village as part of the #EnergyWings project. The main goal of the project is to preserve the white stork population in Ukraine and draw public attention to the problem of biodiversity loss and protecting the environment.
“DTEK is transforming its business in accordance with the New Strategy 2030, based on ESG principles, values and responsibility for progress in achieving the sustainable development goals of the UN Global Compact. This year, within the #EnergyWings project, we are installing 10 nesting platforms in the area. Including two in the village of Pisarevka. Here, thanks to the residents, a young stork was found, which stayed in Ukraine for winter. Now we are now to decide how to treat it and where to keep during this winter. In the spring we plan to release it into its natural habitat,” says Andrii Tereshchuk, General Director for DTEK Dnipro Grids.
Since 2013, power engineers have already installed 180 stork nest platforms across the Dnipropetrovsk region. As well as more than 1,500 casings and reflective diverters that make power lines safe for birds and reduce the risk of power outages for customers. Over the past 8 years, the DTEK Grids operating holding has installed more than 250 nesting platforms in four regions of Ukraine. This saved the lives of over 5,000 birds listed in the Berne Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats. This year, within the #EnergyWings project, 122 more platforms for stork nests are being installed in three regions: Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa and Kyiv.
