Weather gets colder: energy efficiency tips from DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids

The weather gets colder and colder in the Kyiv region. According to weather forecasters, it will be quite cold outside in the coming weeks. Thus, people are turning on heaters and powerful appliances to keep a comfortable temperature in their homes. As a result, the load on the regional power grid increases, which can lead to power outages. Here DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids shares some tips on how to avoid the network overload and have a stable power supply when it’s cold outside.

"DTEK is a reliable, responsible company. During the winter, our field crews work under no timeline to prevent failures on lines and substations. At the same time, we urge our customers not to overload the network otherwise there is a risk of a blackout at home in the most severe frosts,” said Vitaliy Shaida, Head of DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids.

Taking care of its customers, DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids has prepared energy efficiency tips in winter:

  • Choose energy-efficient and energy-saving appliances labeled A, A + and above. Please, pay particular attention to such powerful appliances as refrigerators, boilers, air conditioners, etc;
  • Try to avoid peak hours of network loads between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM, and between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM. This is the time of increased electricity consumption, so there is a risk of blackouts both in an apartment and in the whole area;
  • Do not switch on several powerful appliances at the same time. This is especially true for buildings built before 2000. Their internal power networks are usually not designed for high loads;
  • Turn on powerful appliances at night between from 11.00PM to 7.00AM. Thus, you will avoid load spikes, and save up to 50% if you have a night tariff;
  • Make sure you do not exceed the permitted capacity. Use a special calculator to calculate the power of your devices. If necessary, apply for an increase in capacity;
  • Switch to a three-phase connection, so that you can distribute power and allocate a separate phase to electric heating or a powerful tool;
  • Have the contacts of a professional electrician at call. Whether it’s an electrician from condominium or a managing company, he is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all in-house networks;
