Picnic under power lines - DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids reminds of power lines safety tips
“DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids is a reliable and conscious company. We always remind the residents of the region about the electrical safety rules that can save their health and even life. Remember that each power line has its own safety zone, covering both the land under the towers and the air around. Therefore, it is very dangerous to be in this zone,” says Pyotr Vozny, Head of the ESH Department of DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids.
The safety zone around power lines depends on the voltage class of the overhead line and can be from 2 to 40 meters. You can determine the safe distance yourself. The easiest way is to examine the poles and count the number of insulators.
Distribution power lines with a voltage of 0.4-20 kV are installed on simple concrete and sometimes wooden poles. The wires can be insulated or mounted on porcelain line insulators. The safety zone of such lines ranges from 2 to 10 meters.
Power lines with a voltage of 35-110 kV are installed high concrete or metal poles. The wires are attached to hanging strings with ceramic or glass insulators that resemble plates. The number of insulators is from 3 to 10, depending on the voltage class. The safety zone of such power lines is 10-25 meters.
High and extra-high voltage power lines 330-750 kV have from 14 insulators on a bunch. The poles are made of reinforced concrete or metal. Their safety area is between 30 to 40 meters.
It is worth remembering that not only contact with wires and other parts of power lines poses a threat to human life and health. You can get an electric shock from high-voltage networks even being 5 meters away.
Imagine a situation when a 1.7-meter-tall fisherman walks under wires that are 7 meters away from the ground and carries a 6-meter-long fishing rod on his shoulder. Even if the rod does not touch the wires, there is a risk of electric shock to the fisherman. In addition, modern rods are made of carbon fiber, which conducts electricity very well. Therefore, walking with a fishing rod under power lines is like walking with a metal rod. Also, if the wet line, if the rod casted badly, gets tangled in the wire, this can lead to an electric shock to the fisherman.
In addition, kites must not be launched near power lines. After all, the thread with which the kite is attached can be made with the addition of metal fibers or from the same carbon fiber that conducts electric current well.
