DTEK Grids introduces high-tech digital dispatching rooms to manage the power grids infrastructure. In November 2021, the ADMS (Advanced Distribution Management System) software package from General Electric Digital, a leader in innovative solutions for the energy sector, was set up in Kyiv. In 2022-2025, it will be launched in four more Ukraine’s regions. Using this software, the DSO will see and control the power grid in real time and respond faster to emergencies. Some customers will not even notice an outage since the system will switch customers to backup power sources in less than a minute.

The digital dispatching helps to accumulate a huge amount of data about the power grid infrastructure, process it promptly and help dispatchers to make the best decisions to restore the power supply quickly in case of emergencies. ADMS from General Electric Digital is one of the best software packages in the global energy sector. The system helps to manage the power grids of such European cities as London, Madrid, and Brussels. In November 2021, it was set up at DTEK Kyiv Grids in Kyiv. This is the first instance of such a technological product to be used to manage the power grids in Ukraine.

“DTEK Grids is the first to introduce new technologies, creating an innovative ecosystem within the Distribution System Operators. DTEK Kyiv Grids was the first DTEK Grids DSO to start using a digital control room with ADMS from General Electric Digital. The new system was launched in Kyiv in November 2021. We will extend it to the Dnipropetrovsk region at the beginning of next year, and to the Kyiv, Donetsk, and Odesa regions by the end of 2024. ADMS is one of the world's best solutions for transforming Ukraine’s grids into Smart Grid,” says Ivan Geliukh, CEO for DTEK Grids.

Prior to ADMS, the company was unable to manage the power grid in real time and introduce new systems to proactively notify customers due to outdated dispatch systems.

Thanks to ADMS, the company could combine seven disparate dispatching points of DTEK Kyiv Grids into one large digital dispatching office. So now, dispatchers can see the power grid in real time and quickly respond to non-standard situations. For example, if a failure occurs, the self-healing function will immediately switch some customers to backup power in less than one minute, so they will not notice an outage at all.

Adopting the technology also means shorter recovery time for customers, because the company will be in a position to quickly identify the exact location of a failure. By July 2022, customers will also be receiving emergency push notifications via the company's chatbot.

DTEK Grids believes that ADMS from General Electric Digital meets the new challenges that modern DSOs have to solve every minute. Such as, effective network management in a distributed generation environment, when classic power plants (CHP, HPP, NPP) and a large number of green generations, both medium and small prosumers, operate simultaneously, and the number of electric stations and electric vehicles is growing.

“The power grid management is becoming more and more challenging every day. The grounds for this are the increase in the distributed generation and distributed energy resources volumes at all levels. At the same time, power supply reliability in the distribution network is still a priority. Our ADMS software addresses these challenges, providing our customers with the best solutions,” says Jim Walsh, General Manager, Grid Software Solutions for GE Digital.

There should be a long lead-up time at each DSO before implementing ADMS from General Electric Digital. The system is trained to understand the peculiarities of a particular operator's networks, and the company people are trained to work with the new system. It is always a synergy between the developer and people of a specific DSO, which will end up giving customers the high-quality power supply, new convenient services, and opportunities.
