Contributing to the sustainable development: DTEK has installed 590 bird protection structures in the Kyiv region
In 2021, DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids installed 56 nesting platforms for storks on power towers and 504 special casings on electric power lines. The company has also fabricated and installed over 30 artificial nesting spots for rare species of owls and participated in the largest environmental educational campaign in Ukraine − #EnergyWings, launched by DTEK Grids. These initiatives of business will help save over 840 birds, including the ones, protected by the Bern Convention* and the Red Book of Ukraine.
Protection of biodiversity is one of the DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids priorities. Since 2020, the company takes care about preservation of birds and every year it scales up the ornithological safety program.
“DTEK is transforming its business in accordance with the New Strategy 2030, based on ESG principles, values and business responsibility for progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN Global Compact. Over the course of two years, we have installed 97 nesting platforms for storks, 30 artificial nesting spots for the birds of prey, over 500 special casings on electric power lines. According to ecologists, these initiatives helped save over 800 birds, 400 of which are nestlings. This is our contribution to achieving Sustainable Development Goal No. 15 “Preserving Terrestrial Ecosystems” of the UN Global Compact,” said Vitaliy Shaida, Head of DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids.
In 2021, within the framework of the largest environmental educational project in Ukraine - #EnergyWings, DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids installed 56 nesting platforms for storks on power towers. These special structures help safeguard birds from death and secure the transmission lines from accidents, and company’s customers – from power outages.
In 2021, in order to protect birds from collision with power lines company’s workers installed 504 special insulating casings-caps on lines in the Yagotynskaya and Mironovskaya territorial communities.
In 2021, DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids, in cooperation with ornithologists, fabricated and installed 30 artificial nests for rare species of owls (the scoop and the long-eared owl) in the Arboretum Oleksandriya. Due to depletion in numbers these species are protected by the Bern Convention, the СITES convention and the Red Book of Ukraine.
In 2022, the company will continue contributing to the sustainable development of Kyiv region. Energy workers will install 391 special protection devices and at least 50 nesting platforms for storks, and will implement other initiatives related to protection of biodiversity, thus helping save about 250 more birds.

Ukraine joined the Convention in 1996.
