Schoolchildren from Kyiv got to know about the work of energy workers during the war at the meeting with DTEK Kyiv Grids
Within the framework of the project “Camouflage. The stories of the invincible”, schoolchildren meet brave people, true patriots, who showed remarkable resilience and endurance – the military, volunteers, medical workers. And now – energy workers. People, who did not get frightened in the most terrible circumstances but met the challenge of working in the time of war.
At the meeting, energy workers of DTEK Kyiv Grids told schoolchildren how the country’s energy system is arranged, where does electricity come to their homes from and what equipment helps it get there, how missile strikes impact availability of electricity in the houses.
They also explained how to help the energy system, by using the electrical appliances efficiently and about restoration of the fully destroyed grids in the de-occupied Kyiv region. The energy workers also shared their personal stories of working in the conditions of constant military threat.
“I have been working as an energy worker all my professional life. I met the full-scale war in Kyiv. Since the very first days, I have been repairing the grids after enemy attacks. What changed in my work is that now, once our facilities are hit, we always act in cooperation with the SES and the military. My longest repair since the beginning of war lasted for over two days in a row after an attack on the power facilities of the capital on November 23, 2022, when the entire left bank was left without electricity, heating and water,” –Andrii Toiunda, head of the lines repair and operation center at DTEK Kyiv Grids, shared his memories.
A separate part of the meeting was dedicated to the dual education project. It helps senior students of the specialized higher educational establishments and colleges of the capital combine study at the enterprise and work, getting experience, salary and opportunity for further permanent employment in the company.
The schoolchildren were highly interested in details of working in the conditions of war, asked about what motivated the attendants to start working in the energy industry, about green energy generation and details of how to become an employee of DTEK Kyiv Grids.
“For me personally, this meeting was mainly motivational. After hearing everything, I immediately had a desire to study as much as possible and try myself in various areas. I liked how specialists answered questions, for instance, why it is important to save electricity or explanations about why, for example, the strike on Lviv causes electricity shutdown in Kyiv. It actually was an interesting meeting. I am infinitely grateful to you for an opportunity to live with electricity. You did really great!” – Karyna Kurinna, a pupil of 8 grade, shared her impressions of the meeting.
