Failure rate of the grids in the Dnipropetrovsk region increased 6 times due to application of schedules. During the period of power shutdown schedules application, DTEK Dnipro Grids specialists respond to over 50 emergency calls per day. The failing equipment is mainly the low-voltage one supplying electricity directly to the houses. The main causes of emergencies include residents simultaneously turning on powerful electrical appliances immediately after restoration of power supply, as well as overloads in the in-building networks of the multi-storied buildings. DTEK Dnipro Grids specialists gave advices on how to avoid this.

Schedules of stabilization power shutdowns help energy workers stabilize the energy system of the country after enemy strikes on the power facilities and distribute the available electricity among everyoneAt the same timeapplication of schedules causes an increase in equipment failure rate.

After restoration of the power supply, the largest load falls on the intra-house networksIf the network fails to withstand this starting peakan emergency occurs and the residents are once again left without electricity.

To help the energy workerswe recommend the residents do the following:

  • Disconnect energy-consuming appliances from the grid during the outages.
  • After electricity is restoredwait for at least 30 minutes before turning on energy-consuming appliances (washing machinesboilerselectric stoveselectric heating, etc.).
  • Do not turn on all appliances simultaneously – use it in turns.

Energy workers explain that the most frequent cause of emergencies in the multi-stories buildings is an uneven load distribution between power supply and phasesThe load must be evenly distributedOverloading one of the inputs or one of the phases triggers protections, thus switching off an entire section of the buildingTo reduce the riskscondominium associationshousing cooperatives and managing companies should inspect switchboards and internal networksbalance the load between power supply No.and power supply No.2, as well as across the phases in the buildingmaintain working order of the equipment and replace worn componentsThis allows to avoid up to 95% of the repeated shutdowns after restoration of power supply in accordance with the schedule.

These simple actions will help reduce the load on the grids at the moment of electricity restoration and protect residents from repeated emergencies.
