18,700 live line works: DTEK Grids DSO are expanding the use of the technique despite the war

DTEK Grids Distribution System Operators continue to apply live line work methods without power interruption. In the first half of 2026, energy workers performed 18,700 such works on the overhead distribution lines. This amounts to 59.7% of all works on the 0.4 kV overhead lines.
18,700 live line works: DTEK Grids DSO are expanding the use of the technique despite the war

Live line work — is an advanced technique that allows energy workers to perform repairs and maintenance of the grid without de-energization of the customers. During such work, energy workers use special protective overalls, dielectric gloves, insulated tools and equipment, and follow clear safety standards.

During the first half of 2026, energy workers performed 18,700 such works in the city of Kyiv and in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Odesa regions. The most frequently performed live line works include replacement of insulators, installation and replacement of rebars, cutting of branches near the power lines, elimination of wire damage and other scheduled activities.

“Despite the full-scale war now in its fifth year and all resources are concentrated on restoration of grids after enemy attacks, we continue to expand the use of the technique that allows conducting repairs without disconnection of customers from power supply, – currently this amounts to 59.7% of all works on 0.4 kV power lines. We strive to make such works a regular practice where it is technically possible and safe for the energy workers,” — noted DTEK Grids CEO Alina Bondarenko.

Not all grids are suitable for performance of live line work. Such work is currently performed on low-voltage lines that deliver electricity directly to the buildings. Where voltage levels are higher, it is often not possible to perform the work safely.
