Storks settled in 90% of nests with protected platforms – results of DTEK Dnipro Grids annual monitoring
Energy workers install protective platforms on the overhead power line poles, where the storks have equipped their nests. This helps save birds’ lives, as they may suffer from electrocution, and prevents emergencies in the grid. Such combination of caring for nature and technological approach became possible due to the coordinated work of the energy specialists.
Every spring, DTEK Dnipro Grids specialists inspect the nests during their work missions: whether they are safe and whether the birds have returned. This year’s results are impressive – on average up to 90% of the platforms throughout the region are settled every year, and the nestlings appear in many nests.
After the full-scale invasion, energy workers did not suspend the project. On the contrary, since the beginning of 2025, they have already installed 13 new platforms, though the plan was to install only 8. Residents of the Dnipropetrovsk region actively join the initiative: they inform about the nests in emergency condition, help with monitoring, and some even fabricate the platforms themselves using the energy workers’ drawings. By autumn, it is planned to install 5 more structures in Piatykhatky and Mahdalynivka communities of the region.
“We see our efforts bringing real results — birds returning to the safe nests. This inspires and proves that sustainable approach to work can harmoniously combine care for the nature and energy safety,” – noted DTEK Dnipro Grids CEO Andrii Tereshchuk.
The #EnergyWings initiative, launched in 2013, is being implemented in compliance with the UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 15 – “Preservation of terrestrial ecosystems” – and ESG principles. As of the beginning of June, DTEK Dnipro Grids energy workers installed 242 protective structures for stork nests throughout Dnipropetrovsk region. And every year, this project unites more and more people around the care for nature.
