Storks settled in 98% of nests with protected platforms – results of DTEK Odesa Grids annual monitoring
Energy workers install protective platforms on the overhead power line poles, where the storks have equipped their nests. This helps save birds’ lives, as they may suffer from electrocution, and prevents emergencies in the grid. Such combination of caring for nature and technological approach became possible due to the coordinated work of the energy specialists.
Every spring, DTEK Odesa Grids specialists inspect the nests during their work missions: whether they are safe and whether the birds have returned. This year’s results are impressive – 98% of the platforms in the Odesa region have already been populated, and the nestlings have appeared in the nests.
After the beginning of the full-scale invasion, energy workers did not suspend the project. On the contrary, 25 platforms have been installed in 2024, and already 42 – in 2025. Residents of the districts of the region actively join the initiative: they inform about the nests in emergency condition, help with installation, and some even fabricate the platforms themselves using the energy workers’ drawings. By autumn 2025, it is planned to install 21 more platforms in Izmail, Podilsk and Odesa districts.
“Every platform is not just to improve reliability of power supply, but it is also an important step in preserving biodiversity. For us, it is an integral part of our work,” – noted Dmytro Hryhoriev, CEO at DTEK Odesa Grids.
The #EnergyWings initiative, launched at DTEK Odesa Grids in 2020, is being implemented in compliance with the UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 15 “Preservation of terrestrial ecosystems” and ESG principles. As of the end of May, energy workers installed 300 protective structures for stork nests throughout the region, and every year, this project unites more and more people around the care for nature.
