Why schedules of power shutdowns may change during the day – DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids explains

Thermal power generation07 November 2025
Large-scale enemy attacks on the energy infrastructure of the country, and Kyiv region in particular, force DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids to apply schedules of stabilization power shutdowns starting from October 22. NPC Ukrenergo gives commands about application of the schedules and their duration, as well as volume of consumption to be limited. This is what impacts the schedule of power shutdowns for the next day.

In the evening of the current day, NPC Ukrenergo informs Distribution System Operators if there is a need to apply schedules of stabilization shutdowns tomorrow, how many consumer lines must be limited and at what times of the day. DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids is doing everything possible to stick to the schedules.

However, they may change during the day in accordance with new NPC commands. The Distribution System Operator monitors the balance between electricity consumption, level of generation and the capacity to transmit it. And it makes corresponding decisions to maintain this balance.

The following affects the balance of the energy system:

  • Weather. Heat and cold cause an increase in electricity consumption, as families turn on heaters and air conditioners. Cloudy weather during the day causes a decrease in power generation by solar power plants. Windless weather – in generation by wind power plants.
  • Morning and evening load peaks. When people are preparing to go to work or are returning from it.
  • System accidents, which are caused by grid overload that makes it impossible to transmit produced electricity to the customers.
  • Damage of power facilities due to the attacks may cause shortage in electricity generation and transmission.

The situation in the energy system, especially after massive attacks, changes dynamically, thus requiring NPC Ukrenergo to apply responsive measures. Distribution Systems Operators, DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids in particular, are obliged to implement them to preserve the energy system.

We recommend signing up to the DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids Viber or Telegram chatbot to always be aware of the current schedule of power shutdowns at your address.
