DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids completely digitalized the grids in the Kyiv region
A Digital Twin of the grid is a virtual copy of the real distribution grid on the basis of the specialized software. It includes all available facilities and their features, such as data about customer connection points, consumption, statistics of outages, geospatial data of all grid elements. A Digital Twin accounts for power facilities to be upgraded or built, and can predict the condition of the grid, for example, in three years, thus making it possible to mathematically simulate any changes in the grid and predict its consequences – for instance, connection of new power generation or consumers, consolidation of power junctions, failure of specific equipment.
DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids has now digitalized all medium (6-10 kV) and high (35-150 kV) voltage grids in the Kyiv region. This is the first and the most important stage of implementing the energy infrastructure modernization project “Grids of the Future”. As it is the data received from digital twins that will help plan works performance more efficiently. For example, this technology already made it possible to assess the connection layout of the new substation in the region.
“We set ourselves a goal to not just repair all power facilities, damaged by the russians, but also to build a new advanced grid of the future. In order for it to meet all needs of our customers and challenges of the post-war recovery of the Kyiv region, it is required to use advanced technologies of the Smart Grid. Modern grids will become a foundation for development of economy and connection of the distributed power generation, new facilities of the business, more sustainable and flexible energy system of the region,” – explained DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids CEO Vitalii Shaida.
The process of creating the digital twin includes inspection of all grids by the energy workers, passporting, entering data into the database, further analysis in the software. Pilot performance of the pre-calculations for new connections to the grid is already ongoing to determine the best connection layout and ensure reliability and high quality of power supply for existing and new consumers.
