DTEK Odesa Grids completely digitalized the grids in Odesa region

DTEK Odesa Grids created a Digital Twin of the Odesa region’s grids. The energy company became the first one among Ukrainian DSO to digitalize the medium-voltage grids. This innovative technology helps effectively determine problematic areas in the grid, assess its capabilities for new connections and plan upgrade of the regional energy infrastructure within the framework of the “Grids of the Future” project, thus making it possible to achieve the most reliable power supply possible.

A Digital Twin of the grid is a virtual copy of the real distribution grid on the basis of the specialized software. It includes all available facilities and their features, such as data about customer connection points, consumption, statistics of outages, geospatial data of all grid elements. A Digital Twin accounts for power facilities to be upgraded or built and can predict the condition of the grid, for example, in three years, thus making it possible to mathematically simulate any changes in the grid and predict its consequences – for instance, connection of new power generation or consumers, consolidation of power junctions, failure of specific equipment. 

DTEK Odesa Grids has now digitalized all medium (6-20 kV) and high (35-150 kV) voltage grids in the Odesa region. This is the first and the most important stage of implementing the energy infrastructure modernization project “Grids of the Future”. As it is the data received from digital twins that will help plan works performance more efficiently. For example, this technology already made it possible to start test calculations for new connections to the DSO grids. 

“We set ourselves an ambitious goal to build a new advanced grid of the future. In order for it to meet all needs of our customers and challenges of the post-war development of the Odesa region, it is required to use advanced technologies of the Smart Grid. Modern grids will become a foundation for development of economy and connection of the distributed power generation, new facilities of the business, more sustainable and flexible energy system of the region,” – explained Dmytro Hryhoriev, CEO at DTEK Odesa Grids. 

The process of creating the digital twin includes inspection of all grids by the energy workers, passporting, entering data into the database, further analysis in the software.
