Energy workers of the DTEK Kyiv Grids installed this year’s first protective platform for stork nest in Bortnychi
This year’s first protective platform for stork nest was installed in Bortnychi, which is in the Darnytskyi district of the capital. It will help protect the stork home from potential sliding on the wires and, thus, from probable electrocution of birds and emergencies on the grid.
“By the end of 2025, we plan to reinforce 4 more stork nests. The platform in Bortnychi is this year’s first sign. Despite the storks not usually enjoying settling in noisy megapolises, they do live in Kyiv. And sometimes they pick our poles as the foundation for their homes. And we do everything in our power to make such neighborship safe both for the birds and for the grids,” – noted DTEK Kyiv Grids CEO Denys Bondar.
Since the beginning of the project on reinforcement of stork nests in Kyiv in 2019, the company installed 15 special protective platforms. They can be seen in Troieshchyna, Korchuvate, Bortnychi and Pyrohiv, in particular.
When inspecting the lines, DTEK Kyiv Grids specialists register places where the storks built their nests. Sometimes, local residents tell energy workers about the nests on the poles. After the birds migrate to their wintering grounds, energy workers reinforce the nests in the most emergency state with special protective platforms.
Protection of stork nests is carried out within the framework of the environmental and educational initiative #EnergyWings, directed at preservation of the white stork population in Ukraine. This initiative complies with ESG principles and supports UN Global Compact Sustainable Development Goal No. 15 – “Preservation of terrestrial ecosystems”.
