Three thousand kilometers of the overhead lines in the Dnipropetrovsk region will be protected from incidents during bad weather

Since the beginning of the year, DTEK Dnipro Grids specialists have already cleared more than 1 thousand kilometers of routes under the power lines. This way, company’s specialists protect the girds from potential incidents during bad weather, when falling of branches and trees cause broken wires. Despite the war, energy workers continue to maintain the energy equipment of the region in the operating condition in order to provide electricity to the homes of residents.
Three thousand kilometers of the overhead lines in the Dnipropetrovsk region will be protected from incidents during bad weather

The company services 50,000 km of girds in the region, almost 90% of which are the overhead ones and are located on the poles at a certain height above the ground. They mostly run through the areas of private development and open urban areas. In addition to scheduled repairs and maintenance, operation of such lines without incidents requires regular pruning of trees and other brushwood underneath it.

“For customers convenience, we conduct more and more of such works using the live line works technique. Over the past year, we used this technique to carry out 2,681 out of 6,087 clearings (almost half) on the 0.4 kV low-voltage lines that directly power residential buildings. During January-March of this year, we have also carried out 44% of pruning without de-energization of customers. Overall, energy workers have already cleared 1,065 kilometers of lines, and we plan to increase this figure to more than 3,000 kilometers by the end of 2025. We are doing everything to provide electricity to the residents of the Dnipropetrovsk region,” – commented DTEK Dnipro Grids CEO Andrii Tereshchuk.

In addition to the danger of incidents, touching of crowns and individual branches to the live wire is a direct threat to life, as a tree trunk may become a current conductor and electrocute a person touching it at the time.

Residents of the detached house suburbs should be especially careful. We ask to timely prune trees and bushes in your own yards and plots of land. In accordance with the rules**, landowners and land users are the ones responsible for proper care of greenery. I.e., they should prune trees and bushes. DTEK Dnipro Grids specialists, in their turn, carry out scheduled pruning of trees that grow in the protected zone* of the overhead power lines. While local authorities are pruning trees in the unmanaged territories, wastelands.

To carry out works safely – the owners of private households must agree the time of its performance with DTEK Dnipro Grids via the personal user account, social networks, contact center +38 (056/066/067/063) 790-99-00 or by visiting the Customer Service Centers. The specialists will de-energize the line for the period of work performance to ensure safe pruning of branches.

*power lines’ protected zone is a land plot and air space on both sides of the power lines. For the lines up to 1 kV it is 2 meters on both sides of the line, 3-20 kV – 10 meters, 35 kV – 15 meters, 110 kV – 20 meters, 150 kV, 220 kV – 25 meters, 330 kV, 400 kV, 500 kV – 30 meters, 750 kV – 40 meters.

** In accordance with the Rules of grids protection“ planting trees underneath power lines is prohibited. Landowners and land users should clear green spaces if the tree branches approached the 0.4 kV lines closer than 1 meter or if branches hang over the wires. If the trees are in emergency state and severe weather can make them fall and damage the grids — they should be pruned.
